The Renovation Room is a community of Chicagoland homeowners and verified local contractors. These guidelines keep it a place worth being — they apply to RR Messenger, profiles, project posts, and reviews, on the website and in our mobile app.
Be respectful
No harassment, hate speech, threats, discrimination, or personal attacks. Disagreements happen — handle them the way you would face to face with a neighbor.
Be real
Use your real identity. You must be 18 or older. Post genuine projects, honest profiles, and truthful information. Impersonation, fake listings, and misleading claims are removed and can end your membership.
No spam or scams
No unsolicited advertising, repeated identical messages, phishing, or attempts to move conversations off-platform to avoid accountability. Contractors: contact homeowners about their projects, not with bulk promotion.
Be careful with money
Never wire a deposit or send funds to anyone you have not independently verified. Put every agreement in writing — for jobs over $1,000, Illinois law requires a written contract. The Renovation Room never asks for payment through Messenger.
Moderation & reporting
Conversations in RR Messenger are recorded and may be reviewed by our moderation team. Every message has a report option — reports are reviewed within 24 hours. Depending on severity, we may remove content, suspend messaging, or remove an account. Repeated reports from multiple members can suspend an account automatically pending review.
Blocking
You can block any user from a conversation — neither of you will be able to message the other. To undo a block, contact our team.
Questions or appeals
Email admin@therenovationroom.com or use our contact page. If you believe a moderation decision was wrong, reply to the notice you received and a person will take a second look.
